Susan was born in Hollywood, California, in what is now the Blue Scientology building — not the Celebrity Center, where famous people hold press conferences about their private lives; but a prison-like facility where the nameless underlings are released at noon to do tai chi on the lawn. But it was a hospital before that, which is how she came to be there.
She was raised in Orange County, or “The OC” – back when it was just lima bean fields, orange groves, and a mall. South Coast Plaza Mall. Today the OC is all just one big mall: an endless string of premium and discount stores, and tract homes to house the shoppers. But she got out before they put in a Ross. (That’s when you know a place has jumped the shark: when they put in a Ross).
She got a BA in film at UCLA and and MFA in screenwriting at USC, lived in London, worked as an actor in LA, then moved to New York City and wrote. She wrote a lot. She loved New York, but if you stay in New York long enough you could die there, a bitter old woman with cats.
Susan returned to LA, went through a middle-class white girl’s dark night of the soul, and lived to write about it in her book. She was rejected by eHarmony, and lived to write about it in her next book. She is married the wonderful Larry Wilson.
She’s toured with authors Don Miller and Anne Jackson, and musician Solveig Leithaug. She is currently workshopping a full length version of her solo show based on her book. More wonderful and horrible things happened along the way. You can read her old blog, or her current blog here on the site. Thanks for stopping by.
